Subspecies
Buteo poecilochrous (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) is now lumped with Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma) following SACC (2008).

Forms superspecies with Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma), of which sometimes considered a subspecies. Taxonomy of these species uncertain. May also be related to Galapagos Hawk (Buteo galapagoensis) and White-tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus), and all four sometimes included in superspecies.
