Subspecies
In past, sometimes placed in genus Ametrornis. An almost straight-billed hermit without close relatives, somewhat resembling Scale-throated Hermit (Phaethornis eurynome). A melanistic bird of doubtful origin was described as subspecies fuliginosus, but never verified as referring to a valid population. Birds of nominate subspecies in eastern Andes of Colombia have smaller wings and bill than other populations and may be separable as fuscicapillus, should these differences also be confirmed in Venezuelan birds.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
hyalinus Bangs, 1901 - Pearl Is (off Pacific coast of Panama).
anthophilus (Bourcier, 1843) - Central Panama to Colombia (Magdalena Valley and east of Andes) and northern Venezuela.
