Subspecies
Proposed subspecies dinellii from Jujuy (north-western Argentina) now incorporated into nominate subspecies.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

parvulus (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1892) - Western Andes of Peru to extreme northern Chile.
peruvianus (Chapman, 1919) - Eastern Andes of Peru.
andecolus (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Central Bolivia to western Argentina (Río Negro).
