Subspecies
Western populations of cinereiceps formerly separated as subspecies intermedius.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bonapartei Hartlaub, 1854 - Western Cameroon and Gabon east to south-western and east-central Zaire.
cinereiceps Sharpe, 1891 - Central African Republic, southern Sudan and eastern Zaire, south to northern Angola, Burundi, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-headed Barbet (Gymnobucco cinereiceps).
