Subspecies
May be conspecific with Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus ), Rufous-fronted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus erythrops ) and Dark-backed Wood-Quail (Odontophorus melanonotus ). Possibly most closely related to Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
soederstroemii Lönnberg and Rendahl, 1922 - Eastern and southern Ecuador.
speciosus Tschudi, 1843 - East-central Peru.
loricatus Todd, 1932 - South-eastern Peru to eastern Bolivia.
