Subspecies
Closely related to, and forming a superspecies with, Crimson-hooded Manakin (Pipra aureola) and Wire-tailed Manakin (Pipra filicauda), all three replacing each other geographically.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
saturata Zimmer, JT, 1936 - Tropical zone of northern Peru east of Andes (in San Martín).
purusiana Snethlage, E, 1907 - Eastern Peru south of Amazon (Loreto south to Cuzco) and western Brazil (Acre, and upper R Purús in Amazonas).
fasciicauda Hellmayr, 1906 - South-eastern Peru (northern Puno) and northern and north-eastern Bolivia (near Andes in Cochabamba and northern Santa Cruz).
calamae Hellmayr, 1910 - West-central Brazil (limited area near upper R Madeira and extreme north-western Mato Grosso).
scarlatina Hellmayr, 1915 - Interior Brazil from central Pará (south of Belém area) south to Mato Grosso do Sul, southern Goiás, western Minas Gerais and north-western Sío Paulo, with apparently isolated populations in north-eastern (Ceará and Alagoas), and extreme northern Bolivia (Pando, Beni), south-eastern Paraguay and extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
