Subspecies
Forest Rock-Thrush (Monticola sharpei) and Benson's Rock-Thrush (Monticola bensoni) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Monticola sharpei on the basis of evidence in Goodman and Weigt (2002) and Outlaw et al. (2007), plus a review of recordings of vocalisations by the BirdLife International.
Has been considered conspecific with Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus), Benson's Rock-Thrush (Monticola bensoni) and Littoral Rock-Thrush (Monticola imerina). Described subspecies salomonseni and interioris, from central and southern parts of range, appear untenable. A possibly undescribed rock-thrush, reported from western Madagascar, is evidently intermediate in plumage between this species and Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
erythronotus (Lavauden, 1929) - Highland forest of northernmost Madagascar (Montagne d'Ambre). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus).
sharpei (Gray, 1871) - Madagascar.
bensoni Farkas, 1971 - Montane rocky areas of south-central Madagascar. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Benson's Rock-Thrush (Monticola bensoni).
