(Richmond, 1896)

Habitat
Brackish / saline lagoons. Also, mudflats, saltflats, saltmarshes. From sea-level - 28 m.

Range (Guide)
Madagascar (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 2,700 - 3,500 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Modifications of its wetland habitat on the west coast of Madagascar represent an increasing threat.

Habits
Usually in pairs or small groups, although larger groups sometimes form at roosting sites, often alongside other plover species.

Poorly known, but invertebrates, mainly insects

Nest
A small scrape made in dry grassland.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 2. Incubation: about 26 - 28 days.

Young
Fledge in 28 - 33 days.

Subspecies
Probably best considered to form superspecies with Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius) and St Helena Plover (Charadrius sanctaehelenae).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
White-fronted Plover (Charadrius marginatus) and Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius) which lack a black breast-band and from Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) by the supercilium that circles the crown, the longer, duller greyish legs and paler, more mottled upperparts.
