Habitat
In temperate regions, typically associated with deciduous woods and wetlands. In tropics and subtropics lowland habitats including coastal mangroves, wetlands and woods to inland forest clearings and cultivated areas with water. During migration a wide range of wooded and wetland habitats.

Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Spotted Kingfisher (Actenoides lindsayi) and Rufous-collared Kingfisher (Actenoides concretus), and all sometimes regarded as conspecific. Birds from eastern Mindanao, described as subspecies burtoni, poorly differentiated from those in rest of range and not considered worthy of subspecific recognition.
