Subspecies
Although phenotypic characters approach those of Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata), is genetically more closely related to Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata). Recent genetic studies suggest close relationship also with Marmora's Warbler (Sylvia sarda) and Balearic Warbler (Sylvia balearica). They are part of a group that also contains Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata), Marmora's Warbler (Sylvia sarda), Balearic Warbler (Sylvia balearica), Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata), Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), Ruppell's Warbler (Sylvia ruppeli) and Cyprus Warbler (Sylvia melanothorax). Form named as Sylvia ticehursti, described on basis of single specimen from southern Morocco (near Ouarzazate), and traditionally treated either as a separate species or as a subspecies of present species, is most probably an aberrant individual of subspecies maroccana (which it resembles in general structure and in tail and tertial patterns), or a hybrid between it and subspecies deserti of Desert Warbler (Sylvia nana) (which it resembles in having pale sandy-brown upperparts).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- maroccana Hartert, 1917 - Breeds in Anti-Atlas and Haut and Moyen Atlas, from Jebel Igdet (Morocco) east to Tlemcen (north-western Algeria). Non-breeding also south to western Sahara oases (as far southern as Nouakchott, in western Mauritania).
- deserticola Tristram, 1859 - Breeds Atlas Saharien and Aurí¨s Mts, from Aí¯n Sefra (north-western Algeria) east to Gafsa area (Tunisia). Non-breeding also south to central and southern Algeria (Tademaí¯t Plateau, Tassili n-Ajjer, Ahaggar Mts), north-eastern Mali and central Libya.
