Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Giant Laughingthrush (Garrulax maximus), and the two appear to intergrade between upper R Subansiri (India) and Tsangpo Valley, in south-eastern Xizang (China).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
griseicauda (Koelz, 1950) - Northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh) and western Nepal.
ocellata (Vigors, 1831) - Central Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh) and adjacent southern China (southern and south-eastern Xizang).
maculipectus (Hachisuka, 1953) - Northern Myanmar and southern China (western and north-western Yunnan).
artemisiae (David, 1871) - East-central China (southern Gansu south to west-central Sichuan and extreme north-eastern Yunnan; western Hubei).
