Subspecies
Cranioleuca antisiensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Line-cheeked Spinetail (Cranioleuca antisiensis) and Baron's Spinetail (Cranioleuca baroni) following SACC (2005).

Sister-species to Line-cheeked Spinetail (Cranioleuca antisiensis), and very likely conspecific. Although populations at extremes of ranges are clearly different, the two grade into one another in step-clinal manner. Both form a superspecies together with Red-faced Spinetail (Cranioleuca erythrops), Tepui Spinetail (Cranioleuca demissa), Streak-capped Spinetail (Cranioleuca hellmayri) and Ash-browed Spinetail (Cranioleuca curtata) and all share plumage similarities and mostly lower montane distribution, and their close relationship is consistent with recent genetic data. However, some authors have considered them to belong to a superspecies that also includes Crested Spinetail (Cranioleuca subcristata), Stripe-crowned Spinetail (Cranioleuca pyrrhophia), Bolivian Spinetail (Cranioleuca henricae), Olive Spinetail (Cranioleuca obsoleta), Pallid Spinetail (Cranioleuca pallida) and Creamy-crested Spinetail (Cranioleuca albicapilla), but such a relationship is not supported by recent genetic findings.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • baroni (Salvin, 1895)   -  Andes of northern and central Peru (central Cajamarca and southern Amazonas south to La Libertad, Ancash and west-central Huánuco).
  • capitalis J. T. Zimmer, 1924   -  Andes of central Peru (eastern Huánuco, Pasco).
  • zaratensis Koepcke, 1961   -  Andes of west-central Peru (Lima).
