Western Andes from south-western Colombia (Patia Canyon, in Nariņo) south to southern Ecuador (southern possibly as far as R Chanchan).

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss through deforestation due to intensive logging, human settlement, cattle-grazing, mining and coca and palm cultivation, and possibly illegal international cage-bird trade, are the main threats.
