Estimated population is 5,000 - 13,200 (2010) and decreasing.
Voice
Staccato yelps, 'kleep kleep kleep', 'kyui kyui' or 'pyo hyohyohyo' over territory and during winter. A plaintive dog-like bark, 'kiak-kiak-kiak...' or 'kyow kyow kyow...' during swooping arial display.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form superspecies with Lesser Spotted Eagle (Clanga pomarina).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Lesser Spotted Eagle (Clanga pomarina) is slightly smaller, narrower winged and less stocky, the plumage is generally paler and most show contrast between paler underwing and upperwing-coverts and darker flight feathers. Confusion is also possible with adult Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis), Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax) and Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca).
