Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with White-bellied Canary (Crithagra dorsostriata).

Subspecies intergrade. Proposed subspecies hesperus (described from Port Nolloth, in north-western Northern Cape Province) is considered an intergrade between nominate subspecies and marshalli, and quintoni (from Hillmore, near Beaufort West, in eastern Western Cape) is likewise a synonym of nominate; aurescens (from Kenhardt-Brandvlei road, in central Northern Cape) is synonymized with marshalli.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • damarensis (Roberts, 1922)   -  South-western Angola, Namibia (except extreme south), Botswana and adjacent South Africa (extreme north-eastern northern Cape).
  • flaviventris (Swainson, 1828)   -  Extreme southern Namibia and western and south-western South Africa (east to western eastern Cape).
  • marshalli (Shelley, 1902)   -  South-eastern Botswana, northern and central South Africa (Limpopo Province south to northern Cape, Free State and northern eastern Cape) and lowlands of Lesotho.
  • guillarmodi (Roberts, 1936)   -  Highlands of Lesotho.
