Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland.
Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
A clear 'pee-pee-cheeri-cheeri', similar in quality to that of Rufous-vented Warbler (Sylvia subcoerulea).
Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Parisoma within babbler family (Timaliidae), but recent studies of morphology, behaviour, vocalizations and mitochondrial DNA indicate that it is better included in present genus.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- aridicola (Winterbottom, 1958) - South-western and southern Namibia and north-western and northern South Africa (north-western northern Cape east to North West Province and western Free State).
- layardi (Hartlaub, 1862) - South-western South Africa from north-western northern Cape (Port Nolloth) south to western Cape.
- subsolana (Clancey, 1963) - Great Karoo and Little Karoo (southern South Africa).
- barnesi (Vincent, 1948) - Lesotho.
