Along with Yellow Longbill (Macrosphenus flavicans) and Kemp's Longbill (Macrosphenus kempi) have in the past been considered to be babblers (Timaliidae). Forms a superspecies with Pulitzer's Longbill (Macrosphenus pulitzeri). Eastern populations (DRCongo and Uganda) described as a geographical subspecies, grisescens, but considered not diagnosable.
