Subspecies
Has been considered part of the superspecies formed by Pale-eyed Black Tit (Melaniparus guineensis), White-winged Tit (Melaniparus leucomelas), Southern Black Tit (Melaniparus niger), Carp's Tit (Melaniparus carpi) and White-bellied Tit (Melaniparus albiventris), possibly also White-backed Black Tit (Melaniparus leuconotus), but is ecologically separated from all of these and all other African tits.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
funereus (Verreaux & Verreaux, 1855) - Sierra Leone and Guinea east, discontinuously, to DRCongo, southern Uganda, extreme southern Sudan and western Kenya.
