Subspecies
This species and White-flanked Sunbird (Aethopyga eximia) have in the past been placed together in a separate genus, Urodrepanis, but no evidence that they are particularly closely related.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
latouchii Slater, 1891 - South-eastern China (eastern Sichuan east to Fujian, south to Guangxi and Guangdong), northern Vietnam and central Laos. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Fork-tailed Sunbird (Aethopyga latouchii).
