Botswana, Namibia, South Africa.

Southern Namibia (southern from northern Namaqualand), extreme south-western Botswana (Kalahari-Gemsbok National Park) and western half of South Africa (Great Karoo).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
A short 'preep' or 'chip-chip', uttered in flight. THe male has a butterfly-like aerial display.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Typically considered to be an outlier within Eremopterix, because of its unusual plumage. Whether this reflects a basal position within the genus is unclear.
