First Described (Guide)
(Layard, 1854)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 460 - 1,220 m.

Range (Guide)
Sri Lanka (B) (NB).

South-western Sri Lanka.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat clearance and degradation through logging, fuelwood collection, conversion to agriculture and tree plantations, gem mining, settlement and fire are the main threats.

Food
Tree fruit, invertebrates and the nectar of the red cotton tree.

Voice
A starling-like 'chirp'. Generally silent.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus occasionally subsumed into Sturnia. Species was until recently referred to as Sturnus senex, but that name is not applicable, as type specimen is a misidentified subadult of Red-billed Starling (Spodiopsar sericeus).
