Subspecies
Often placed in genus Turdus, but perhaps more closely related to Zoothera. Subspecies stierlingi and pauciguttata considered of doubtful validity.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
simensis (Rüppell, 1837) - Eritrea and Ethiopia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ethiopian Thrush (Psophocichla simensis).
stierlingi (Reichenow, 1900) - Central and eastern Angola east to Tanzania.
pauciguttata Clancey, 1956 - Southern Angola, northern Namibia, north-western Botswana and western Zimbabwe.
litsitsirupa (Smith, 1836) - Central Namibia and southern Zambia southern and east to northern South Africa, Swaziland and southern Mozambique.
