Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pachycephala cinerea, White-vented Whistler (Pachycephala homeyeri) and Island Whistler (Pachycephala phaionota). Often treated as conspecific with Pachycephala cinerea and White-vented Whistler (Pachycephala homeyeri).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

albiventris (Ogilvie-Grant, 1894) - Northern Luzon (Cordillera Mts, Sierra Madre), in northern Philippine Islands.
crissalis (Zimmer, JT, 1918) - Central and southern Luzon (Zambales Mts, Mt Banahao, Mt Isarog, Mt Mayon).
mindorensis (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) - Mindoro.
