Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-and-white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca), Rusty-tinged Antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii), Bay Antpitta (Grallaria capitalis) and Yellow-breasted Antpitta (Grallaria flavotincta) and in the past was commonly treated as conspecific with Yellow-breasted Antpitta (Grallaria flavotincta).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

hypoleuca Sclater, 1855 - Colombia in in central Andes (Antioquia) and on western slope of eastern Andes (from Santander south to Cundinamarca).
castanea Chapman, 1923 - Southern Colombia (southern from head of Magdalena Valley) and eastern Ecuador south to northern Peru.
