Status EX
Of the two subspecies, mercierii, is known only from the type collected during the 1836-1839 voyage of the Venus, and the subspecies tristrami, is known from at least 11 specimens, the last collected by the Whitney Expedition in 1922. Extinction has been attributed to predation by the introduced Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), as well as by introduced rats and cats.

Subspecies
A member of the large Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) species-group, most closely related to White-capped Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus dupetithouarsii). Usually associated with the Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) subgroup.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- mercierii ! (Des Murs & Prévost, 1849) - Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia.
- tristrami ! Salvadori, 1892 - Hiva Oa, French Polynesia.
