Habitat
Hill and montane forest. Generally above c.900 m, but sometimes as low as 300 m in the lowland forests of the wet zone.

Range (Guide)

Sri Lanka (B).

Sri Lanka, occurring mainly in the hill country of the interior.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through extensive clearance, logging, fuelwood-collection, conversion to agriculture and tree plantations, gem mining, settlement and fire, is the main threat.

Voice
Mainly silent. A deep, owl-like 'hoo' uttered in courtship display.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Ashy Woodpigeon (Columba pulchricollis) and Nilgiri Woodpigeon (Columba elphinstonii).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Green Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula aenea) which is larger, lacks black-and-white neck pattern, has metallic green upperparts and maroon undertail-coverts.
