Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 1,050 - 1,700 m.
Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru.
Population

Subspecies
May be conspecific with Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus), Rufous-fronted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus erythrops) and Dark-backed Wood-Quail (Odontophorus melanonotus). Possibly most closely related to Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- soederstroemii Lönnberg and Rendahl, 1922 - Eastern and southern Ecuador.
- speciosus Tschudi, 1843 - East-central Peru.
- loricatus Todd, 1932 - South-eastern Peru to eastern Bolivia.
