Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), Tahiti Swallow (Hirundo tahitica), Angola Swallow (Hirundo angolensis), Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena), White-throated Swallow (Hirundo albigularis) and Ethiopian Swallow (Hirundo aethiopica). Has been considered conspecific with Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica). Paler birds from northern part of range of nominate often separated as subspecies clara, but variation probably clinal.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
lucida Hartlaub, 1858 - Senegal and extreme southern Mauritania east to south-western Niger, south to Liberia, northern Togo and Benin.
