Subspecies
Thought most closely related to, and perhaps forming a superspecies with, Patagonian Mockingbird (Mimus patagonicus).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
saturninus (Lichtenstein, 1823) - Southern Suriname and northern Brazil (lower Amazon in Pará).
frater Hellmayr, 1903 - Central and eastern Bolivia and central Brazil (east to Ceará, western Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, south to Mato Grosso and Santa Catarina).
arenaceus Chapman, 1890 - North-eastern Brazil (Paraíba south to eastern Bahia).
modulator (Gould, 1836) - South-eastern Bolivia and Paraguay south to central Argentina, extreme south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay.
