Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru.

Andes of central and southern Peru, northern Chile, western and south-western Bolivia and north-western Argentina.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus considered closely related to Knipolegus and allies on basis of external and internal morphology. Formerly treated as conspecific with Austral Negrito (Lessonia rufa).
