Eastern Brazil (Alagoas and Bahia) south to eastern Uruguay and eastern Paraguay (Alto Paraná). Purported Argentinian distribution (in Misiones) apparently based on supposition, with no confirmed records or data.
 
Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White Hawk (Pseudastur albicollis) and Grey-backed Hawk (Pseudastur occidentalis). Has been considered a subspecies of White Hawk (Pseudastur albicollis).
