Habitat loss and fragmentation due to increasing pressure from human population increases, conversion to agriculture, grazing and logging, and hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
The only taxon in the Spilornis complex that is definitely separate species and not subspecies of Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela), as occurs in sympatry with subspecies davisoni of Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela).
