Subspecies
Subspecies horsfieldi intergrades with nominate in western Nepal. In India, proposed subspecies griseiceps (from Ghoom, near Darjeeling) considered inseparable from nominate and ripleyi (from Mawryngkneng, in Khasi Hills) synonymized with koelzi.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
horsfieldi (Blyth, 1843) - Western Himalayas in northern India (Mussoorie, in western Uttaranchal) and western Nepal.
nipalensis (Hodgson, 1837) - Western Nepal east to Sikkim and Darjeeling (northern India).
koelzi Ripley, 1948 - Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland south to Chittagong Hills) east to southern China (southern Xizang east to central Sichuan and north-western Yunnan) and northern Vietnam.
victoriae Rippon, 1904 - Western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
