Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Parus, but seems to have no close affinities with any member of family. Possibly closest to Melanochlora. Actions and plumage suggest possible relationship with kinglets (Regulidae), but vocalizations, breeding habits, diet, bill morphology and leg colour all typical of present family. Somewhat darker birds in southern Assam (north-eastern India) sometimes separated as subspecies saturatior.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • simlaensis Baker, ECS, 1917   -  North-western Himalayas from Kashmir east to north-central India (Kumaon).
  • modestus Burton, 1836   -  Central and eastern Himalayas, north-eastern India (hills of southern Assam to Nagaland and Manipur), north, western and south-eastern Myanmar, south-central and south-eastern China (south-eastern Xizang and south-eastern Yunnan east, patchily, to Guizhou, Guangdong and north-western Fujian), north-western Thailand, northern and south-eastern Laos and northern and south-central Vietnam (western Tonkin, southern Annam).
  • klossi Delacour & Jabouille, 1930   -  South-central Vietnam (Da Lat Plateau).
