Subspecies
Subspecies differ significantly in size, morphology and vocal patterns, and are widely separated geographically and may represent two distinct species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
oatesi Salvadori, 1887 - Breeds extreme north-eastern India, southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to south-western Sichuan and Yunnan) and probably northern Myanmar. Non-breeding south to west, central and eastern Myanmar and north-western and central Thailand. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Large Vivid Niltava (Niltava oatesi).
