Shady streams in broadleaf evergreen hill forests. To about 900 m.

Bhutan (B), China (mainland) (B), India (B), Laos (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Vagrant to Bangladesh (B), Nepal (B).

Eastern Nepal to southern China.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Voice
A loud, sharp whistled 'chheee', similar to that of Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), but deeper and more hoarse.

Subspecies
Closely related to Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). Sometimes referred to as Alcedo grandis, but this name is preoccupied and therefore invalid.
