Coastal south-eastern Brazil from south-eastern Bahia, Espírito Santo and eastern Minas Gerais south, mostly on coastal slopes of Serra do Mar, to northern Rio Grande do Sul.

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NR
Habitat destruction and degradation through urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building, are the main threats.

Recent molecular-genetic data do not support monophyly of genus as currently constituted: six (including present species) of eight species sampled embedded with Tangara, a finding that makes genus Tangara paraphyletic.
