Mountains (tepuis) in southern Venezuela (western and central Amazonas and south-eastern Bolívar), extreme northern Brazil (Roraima) and western Guyana.

Closely related to and forming a superspecies with Mountain Grackle (Macroagelaius subalaris) and they have sometimes been regarded as conspecific, but differ appreciably in body and bill proportions, plumage and vocalizations.
