Status CR
Introduced house mouse Mus musculus poses the greatest threat through competition and predation.

Voice
Contact call is a 'keet keet' and song is a high, keening whistle.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes placed in genus Nesospiza, but exhibits affinities also with Melanodera. Morphological and genetic evidence indicate that this species belongs with the Neotropical finches, distant from Old World Emberiza.
