Eastern slope of eastern Andes in southern Colombia (Serranía de los Churumbelos in eastern Caucaâ€"western Caquetá, and eastern Nariñoâ€"western Putumayo border), eastern slope in Ecuador (Sucumbíos south to Zamora-Chinchipe) and almost entire eastern slope in Peru (south to Puno).

Has been considered to form a superspecies with Purplish-mantled Tanager (Iridosornis porphyrocephalus), and sometimes treated as conspecific. Evidence for treatment as two separate species is weak, and sympatry not proven.
