Subspecies
Recent molecular data indicate that present genus, Cissopis and Neothraupis are one another's closest relatives.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
capistrata (zu Wied-Neuwied, 1821) - Eastern Brazil from southern Pará, southern Maranhío, central Piauí, northern Goiás and southern Bahia (also eastern Pernambuco and Alagoas) south to central Minas Gerais.
ruficapillus (Vieillot, 1817) - Eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (northern Misiones) and south-eastern Brazil (southern Minas Gerais south to eastern Paraná).
