Subspecies
Was formerly sometimes placed in Myiotheretes or Xolmis. Most recent authors prefer retention of monotypic genus on basis of internal and external morphology. Subspecies poorly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
orinomus Wetmore, 1946 - Northern and central Colombia (Santa Marta Mts and north-eastern Andes).
erythropygius (Sclater, 1853) - Southern Colombia (Nariņo) south to western and central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
