Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Pacific-slope Flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
salvini Ridgway, 1886 - Highlands of south-eastern Mexico (southern from eastern Oaxaca) south to northern Nicaragua.
imperturbatus Wetmore, 1942 - Sierra de Tuxtla, in south-eastern Veracruz (Mexico).
flavescens Lawrence, 1865 - Highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama.
