Subspecies
Forms superspecies with African Goshawk (Accipiter tachiro), with which often considered conspecific, but differs in size, coloration and apparent lack of display flight. Subspecies macroscelides and lopezi have also been considered to form another full species.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
macroscelides (Hartlaub, 1855) - Senegambia to western Cameroon in rain forest.
toussenelii (Verreaux, J & Verreaux, E, 1855) - Southern Cameroon to Gabon, in lower Zaire River basin.
canescens (Chapin, 1921) - Upper Zaire River basin.
