Subspecies
Disjunct Nicaraguan population reportedly indistinguishable from South American populations.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
leonae Chubb, C, 1918 - Nicaragua; northern Colombia through Venezuela and Trinidad to Guyana and Surinam, and south to R Amazon.
swainsonii Vigors, 1825 - Brazil south of R Amazon to eastern Peru, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
magnus Chubb, C, 1918 - Coastal western Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru.
