Habitat
Tropical, lowland evergreen and lower montane rainforest, including densely vegetated, forest-edge habitats, thick understoreys of primary forest, streams, damp gullies and thick secondary growth, abandoned rice-fields. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

N, north-central and south-eastern Sulawesi.

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging, conversion to agriculture, development, hunting are the main threats.

Habits
Flightless.
Voice
A brief wheeze followed by a longer snoring noise 'ee-orrrr'. Also a deep sighing 'mmmm'.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Occurs alongside Blue-faced Rail (Gymnocrex rosenbergii) which has blue patch around eye and uniform black underparts.
