Voice
Rapi, soft, high-pitched 'fee fee fee'. A hard 'crik crik' in flight.

Nest
In a hole of a tree or stump.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 5, sometimes 6; white; rounded; about 26 x 23 mm. Incubation: 19 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in about 5 weeks.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Northern Rosella (Platycercus venustus) and Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius) and sometimes considered conspecific with both.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • adscitus (Latham, 1790)   -  North-eastern Qld, Cape York Peninsula south to about Cooktown.
  • palliceps Lear, 1832   -  North-eastern Qld from about Mackay, south to northern New South Wales.
