Derivation
Al-is'-te-rus - after Alister, son of G.M. Mathews (1876 - 1949), prominent Australian ornithologist: scap-u-la'-ris - L., shouldered

Habitat
Rainforests, eucalypt forests, palm forests, dense gullies, clearings, coastal woodlands, regrowth with berry-bearing shrubs. Crops, orchards, parks, gardens.

Food
Seeds, fruits and berries. Occasionally maize.

Voice
A shrill 'crassak-crassak' contact call in flight, repeated frequently. Piping whistle while perched.

Nest
In a hollow of a tree, sometimes as deep as 6 meters below the entrance.

Eggs (Guide)
3, sometimes 4 or 5; white; rounded; 31 - 34 x 25 - 28 mm. Incubation: about 20 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in about 35 days. Fed firstly by female, then when they are half-grown, by both parents.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • scapularis (Lichtenstein, 1818)   -  From inland Rockhampton south to Victoria.
  • minor Mathews, 1911   -  On tableland rainforests north of Townsville.


Similar Species
Male with male and female with female Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans), which has a blue cheek. Male has blue in wings, female has red on head.
