Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp forest, kerangas, magroves, plantations. From sea-level - 500 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Singapore (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest destruction through logging and land conversion, and fires are the main threats.

Habits
Gregarious, often in large groups.

Food
Oil palm nuts, fruits, seeds, buds.

Voice
A sharp, downslurred, high-pitched 'tse-tsee-tsee...' uttered in flight.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

cyanurus (Forster, 1795) - Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, Sumatra.
pontius Oberholser, 1912 - Mentawi Islands southwards from Siberut.
abbottii Richmond, 1902 - Simeulue and Siumat. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Simeulue Parrot (Psittinus abbotti).

Similar Species
Blue-naped Parrot (Tanygnathus lucionensis) which is much larger, lacks any blue on the rump, has an all-red bill and a different pattern on the wing coverts.
