Subspecies
Closely related to Siberian Grouse (Falcipennis falcipennis), with which forms superspecies.
Occasional hybrids are known with Dusky Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus), Willow Grouse (Lagopus lagopus) and Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus). Subspecies osgoodi often included in nominate.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
- osgoodi (Bishop, 1900) - Alaska (Yukon and Kowak Valleys) and north-western Canada east to Great Slave L and L Athabaska.
- atratus (Grinnell, 1910) - Southern Alaska (Bristol Bay to Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound).
- canadensis (Linnaeus, 1758) - Canada from central Alberta to Labrador Peninsula.
- canace (Linnaeus, 1766) - South-western Canada (southern Manitoba to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia) and north-eastern USA (northern Minnesota to eastern Maine).
- torridus Uttal, 1939 - Nova Scotia.
- franklinii (Douglas, 1829) - South-eastern Alaska and British Columbia through northern Rocky Mts to central Idaho and north-western Wyoming. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Franklin's Grouse (Falcipennis franklinii).
- isleibi Dickerman & Gustafson, 1996 - South-eastern Alaska (USA).
